This launcher will be the workhorse of European access to space in the next decade. The lecture will explain the rationale for development of this new version of Ariane. It will address the story of Ariane launchers, present the worldwide competition and satellites market.

The shift of Ariane 6 compared to its predecessors is the new organization implemented to develop and produce the launcher. The challenge of Ariane 6 is not only technical, but also to increase the competitiveness of the European offer of launch services. This aspect will be presented in detail.
